Melbourne tram accessibility for wheelchair user

Improving Tram Accessibility for Wheelchair Users

This project investigates the current limitations of Melbourne’s tram system in serving wheelchair users. Research drawn from the PTV website, user testimonials, and site observations revealed several barriers: difficulty identifying tram capacity during peak hours, lack of clear instructions for new wheelchair users, poor visibility at night, unclear stop notifications, and a low proportion of fully accessible tram stops.

To respond to these issues, the design proposes five key features: an external electronic display showing real-time wheelchair space availability; a QR code offering essential travel guides and contact info; improved lighting at tram entrances for safer nighttime travel; an in-tram screen displaying upcoming stops with visual indicators; and a driver-controlled automatic ramp to support independent boarding. Together, these features aim to enhance clarity, safety, and accessibility for all passengers with mobility needs.
