COUNTER-SPACE
DESIGN WEEK 2024 EVENT
This event, presented by the RMIT Design Archives for Melbourne Design Week 2024, explores the architectural history of the Lyceum Club in Ridgeway Place, Melbourne — a space designed and reshaped exclusively by women architects since its establishment in 1957. The original conversion of the warehouse buildings was undertaken by Ellison Harvie in 1952, with subsequent renovations by Berenice Harris, Cunningham and Keddie Architects, and Kerstin Thompson Architects (KTA), whose principal received the 2023 RAIA Gold Medal.
The event includes a pre-talk viewing of archival materials such as architectural drawings and ephemera at the RMIT Design Archives, offering cultural and historical context. The main event is a live conversation between Kerstin Thompson, Eli Giannini, and Professor Julie Willis, reflecting on 70 years of transformation and architectural legacy.
The project highlights the intersection of gender, architecture, and cultural institutions, celebrating the Club’s enduring mission: to provide a safe, inclusive, and intellectually stimulating environment for women since 1912.
I was primarily responsible for the extraction and organisation of graphics and data for use by the broader team; the design of the event poster; the layout and visual identity of the website homepage; and supporting the publication process and final installation setup. In the final stage, I also worked closely with the team to complete the exhibition decoration and on-site preparation together.
